Volume

To get the deals you had to buy VOLUME.  I found all the sources and got quotes.

• The piece price of a poker top is from China is about $10.55
• The minimum purchase quantity is $5000 dollars
• The units are shipped by boat for about $800 per container
• Wire transfer only, no returns

Result: So to get 470 pieces into your inventory is $5800, $12.34 per unit. Not counting storage cost. Multiply by several thousand for the major retailers.

Quality

Imported tops are made by Chinese workers making $ 0.53  per hour and living in company owned housing. 60 hour work weeks are not uncommon. This results in quality are shockingly apparent.

• Of the final 60% of product half where returned by customers for quality problems.
• Online retailers charge a %10 restocking fee and don't refund shipping, even on damaged product. That's because their entire cost for the product is less than the shipping cost. They MAKE MONEY shipping damaged product, and even more if customers don't bother shipping it back

Result: The final cost of shippable product jumps to $39.18 ea after all is said and done. Major retailers need huge margins to meet sales goals so they are cutting the product line. On-line retailers can't absorb the hit and are slowly disappearing. Poor quantity always catches up to you.
